Pinterest!

Have you found Pinterest yet? I just did and I love it!

It's a virtual scrapbook, an online bulletin board where you can "pin" the images (with links to their content) of all the wonderful, eye-catching, and even bizarre things you find online.

I love it because it helps me to organize and remember some of my favorite things - be them jewelry, color palettes, recipes, fashion, or just cute animals. If you would like to check out what I like, you can see my "boards" HERE.

Happy Pinning!

A New Direction and New Designs!

I have been really changing my style lately and am happy with the results :) When I started making jewelry I used all vintage ingredients (which I still love) and the pieces were very chunky and colorful.

Recently I have discovered a passion for bead weaving, wire wrapping, and bead embroidery. With this new found love, I have been creating very delicate, intricate, and highly detailed designs. This new direction feels "right" and harks to my past of having made 1" scale miniatures. I have also discovered that I am really drawn to a sepia toned colored palette. Here are a couple of my newer designs, I hope you enjoy!

Making of the headpiece to the Satff of Ra: Indiana Jones - Raiders of The Lost Ark

This past Halloween a good friend of mine, Heather from Chic Ink, wanted to dress of Marion from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Her costume was almost complete except for the medallion which Marion wore, which happened to be the headpiece to the Staff of Ra. She came to me for advice on how she could come up with such a thing....

After going through various ideas in my head, I came to realize that the only way that this was going to look "real" was to sculpt it. Below is a photo journal of the project :)

Above is an image of the actual movie prop. I printed out this image and went about making my own version.
I had so much fun doing this! Thanks Heather for the fun idea.

Creating A Design Board

One thing I have always struggled with is finding my unique "look" as a designer. I have always wanted a cohesive feel to my line, but it has been a struggle - everything always appears so scattered to me. It's not for lack of ideas, there are just too many disciplines of jewelry making which I enjoy and I can never focus in on just a few. This has been bothering me for some time, so today I had an idea.....

Much the way interior designers create design boards for their clients, I decided to create a design board for my jewelry collection.

I took a picture frame, popped out the glass, and replaced it with a layer or green silk. I then selected my favorite pieces of jewelry, the ones I was most excited about creating and the ones I personally wear over and over again. These are the pieces which make me feel good and inspired.

I then carefully arranged them on the board, pinning them there. Then I hung the board in my living room, somewhere that I would see it and be reminded of what makes my jewelry "mine". When I took a step back, a funny thing happened: all the jewelry actually does have a cohesive feel, and I do have an actual collection. This realization makes me exceedingly happy. I now feel like I can build upon this foundation and continue to design but this time with direction.

After I was happy with what I had created, I asked Brett to come look at it. I then presented my board to him and told him my thought process and why I chose each piece (sounds corny, I know). It was a good exercise for me to verbally explain to someone why my collection is special and why it works. He then gave me some really good feedback and has me thinking in a couple new directions. Thanks Brett!

Ok, enough musings for today......
